Navigating the Parenting Journey

The Art of Partnering with Your Co-Parent

In the hustle and bustle of our fast-paced lives, finding a balance between work and family can be challenging, especially for us busy fathers. However, I have found the key to successfully navigating the parenting journey lies in the art of partnering with your co-parent. You will never 100% agree with everything but I promise you, communicating and “talking it out” makes it much more easier to manage this “dad vibe”. Andwhen you’re juggling a demanding job or facing the daily grind, collaborating with your partner is THE ONLY WAY to make parenting more manageable but also create a strong foundation for your childs growth and development. You are their biggest example!

1) Communication is key

Effective communication is a must in any successful partnership, but especially in co-parenting. Life is hectic and when you get really good at changing diapers and refilling formula bottles, things can get mundane! We get easily distracted and forget there is another human on the other side going through exactly what we are going through. We get caught up in work-related stress (thinking about the deadline, next presentation…never ending), home stress (bills, dinner, etc.), and other things, making it even more crucial to establish open lines of communication with your co-parent. Check in regularly with your co-parent (whatever frequency feels right for you). Set a dedicated time through out the day if it feels easier to check in or even once a week. In the beginning I found it was always best to OVER communicate about everything (sleep habits, formula types, clothing).

2)Divide and Conquer

Dividing parenting responsibilities becomes essential for maintaining a harmonious household. At first you make think you are superman / superwoman and can do everything. But you will learn quick, you CANT always do everything. Simply because there are never ending tasks when it comes to babies and toddlers and for your own sanity. You would never have times to do what you enjoy and reset. Collaborate with your co-parent to identify each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and divide tasks accordingly. Showering the toddler vs the infant? Washing the bottles vs filling the formula bottles? Feeding the toddler (food flying around) vs feeding the infant? Bedtime routines….and it goes on and on! Creating a well-thought-out division of responsibilities can reduce stress and create a more efficient parenting dynamic. Remember, it’s not about competing but complementing each other during this process.

3) Flexibility and Adaptability

Pro tip: Life is unpredictable, be flexible

Here is the truth: Life is unpredictable, especially when you have children. Im going to be honest, I struggled a lot with this. I was always a person with set plans and wanted to complete them as such. But you learn quickly things dont always go as planed. Always expect the unexpected. Expect things to never go as planned. You have to become flexible in your plans. Embrace it! I promise life will go much smoother and you will feel much better. Finding a cooperative mindset, seeking solutions together with your co-parent makes this journey much easier. Flexibility not only helps in navigating the ups and downs of parenting but also sets a positive example for your little one on how to adapt to life’s uncertainties.

4) Quality time

It really matters! Children especially toddlers crave for their parents attention. Their normal development is directly tied to it. It may seem tempting to multitask and do light reading or texting on your phone while playing with building blocks, but kids pick up on it. My toddlers behavior is MUCH better if I give him 20-30 minute of my undivided attention and play with him. Wether it playing outside, going for a walk, playing with one of his toys. I think its so crucial to prioritize quality time with your little one. It sets an example for them as well. Also carve out time with your co-parent. Goes back to point 1: communication. This is the best time to communicate and do your check ins.

This is the best story… Everybody loves it!

Partnering with your co-parent is a continuous journey that requires effort, communication, and collaboration. As a busy dad, I think you have to find the right balance between work and family with a shared commitment to effective communication, a thoughtful division of responsibilities, flexibility, and the prioritization of quality time.
